Frown lines are vertical lines or wrinkles that form between the eyebrows or on the forehead as a result of repeated facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows. These lines are also known as glabellar lines or '11 lines' because they often appear as two parallel vertical lines. Frown lines can become more pronounced and noticeable with age as the skin loses elasticity and collagen. They can be treated with various cosmetic procedures such as Botox injections, dermal fillers, or laser resurfacing to help smooth out the lines and improve the appearance of the skin.
Frown lines are caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, ageing, and repeated facial expressions. When we make facial expressions such as frowning, squinting or raising our eyebrows, the muscles between our eyebrows contract, causing the skin to crease and fold. Over time, the repeated contraction of these muscles can cause permanent creases and wrinkles to form in the skin, resulting in frown lines.
Additionally, as we age, the skin loses collagen and elasticity, which makes it less able to bounce back from these repeated expressions. This makes frown lines more pronounced and noticeable. Sun exposure, smoking, and other environmental factors can also contribute to the development of frown lines by accelerating the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. In some cases, frown lines can also be caused by certain medical conditions or medications, such as thyroid disorders, Parkinson's disease, or prolonged use of corticosteroids. In these cases, treating the underlying condition or adjusting medication can help improve the appearance of frown lines.
There are several natural remedies that can help reduce the appearance of frown lines, including staying hydrated, protecting the skin from the sun, massaging the facial muscles, practising facial exercises, and using good-quality skincare products.
People who frequently make facial expressions such as frowning or squinting, people who smoke, those who have had prolonged sun exposure, and those who are over the age of 40 are more prone to developing frown lines.
While frown lines cannot be completely prevented, certain measures such as protecting the skin from the sun, exercising the facial muscles, and using good-quality skincare products with resurfacing ingredients can help reduce their appearance.
There are several treatment options for frown lines, including Botox injections, dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, and chemical peels. These treatments can help smooth out these lines and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
Deep lines between the eyes, frown lines or 11 lines can often make clients look tired or angry.
At RSA, we have lots of non-injectable solutions to help soften this problematic area. However, due to the strength of the muscle, the amount of movement and, of course, the desired outcome for the client, injectable intervention such as Botox/muscle-relaxing injections is sometimes the only way to completely diminish these lines.
